Rie Nakajima
Japan

The Japanese artist and musician Rie Nakajima (* 1976) creates installations and performances with small kinetic devices and prepared everyday objects that produce sound. Her works are created in direct response to a specific architectural space. Influenced by chance and external circumstances, sculpture and sound combine in ever-changing ways. Nakajima regularly collaborates with sound artists and experimental musicians such as David Cunningham, Pierre Berthet, Marie Roux, Billy Steiger, David Toop and Akira Sakata. She performs worldwide and shows her work in solo and group exhibitions from the Tate Modern in London to the Around Sound Festival in Hong Kong and the Kunsthalle Schirn in Frankfurt, where she was part of the "Big Orchestra" exhibition in 2019. Rie Nakajima first appeared in Switzerland in 2014 as part of Culturescapes Tokyo with one of her sound performances.
