The musician and installation artist Dorit Chrysler (*1966) is one of the world's best theremin players. Theremin, invented in 1920 by the Russian Lev Theremin, is the only electronic instrument that can be played without touching it, just by moving your hands in the air. Chrysler, who lives in New York and Berlin, has performed with artists such as Carsten Nicolai, Philip Glass and Marilyn Manson. She composes music for films (Lars von Trier) and TV, most recently for the crime series «Borowski und das Haupt der Medusa» (2025). Her installation works have been shown internationally, for example at the Venice Biennale. For KLANG MOOR SCHOPFE 2025, Chrysler is adapting her installation «Calder plays Theremin», which was inspired by Alexander Calder's mobile sculptures and was shown at the MoMA in New York. She turns mobile «performative» objects found on site into theremin players.
